Motivation is the first thing to go in the winter months. Who wants to get out of their warm cosy bed and go exercise first thing in the morning or stay out an extra hour in the evening? You could be at home, getting in an extra episode of whatever show it is you’re addicted to right now, or prepping for that next big audition with a hot cuppa.
So how do we hold onto the motivation to keep fit in the cooler months?
Below are some pointers that help me keep the active wear, active!
1. DO IT IN THE MORNING.
I love to wake myself up with a great workout. I find it helps me to get prepped and focused, and allows me to handle whatever the day throws at me. Sometimes your great intentions can slide during the day, so when you get it done first thing in the morning, you have got nothing to worry about. So lay that gym gear out the night before, set the alarm, and start the day off right.
2. FILL YOUR TUMMY WITH CLEAN, NUTRITIOUS FOOD.
Simple, whole foods fill our bodies with goodness and give us the energy to get out there and move. Stay away from packaging and eat like our grandparents would have when they were kids. Take advantage of slow cookers and fill it with veggies, low GI carbs, protein, and bone broth. Then come home to the best thing about winter – stews and soups. Nourishing your body is just as important as moving it.
3. HAVE A GOAL.
My goal is to compete in the Tough Mudder this November. I can’t just start training for that once the nice weather comes. I gotta get my butt working now. Having something to work towards over winter is a great motivator.
Find a fun run or a marathon, or come join me getting tough!
4. GET A BUDDY.
My mum and I train together. It’s highly unlikely we both feel unmotivated at the same time, so one is always there to give a little nudge to the other if necessary.
Workout of the Month.
Check out this month’s workout below. Take it outside like me, or if you really can’t stand the cold, utilize the functional training area of your local gym.
Until next time . . .
