Health Uncensored: Actors, Fake It ‘Til You Make It!

Everyone knows the motto of this biz: “Fake it ’til you make it!” This can be applied to most situations in life where you gotta pump yourself up and tap into your own inner Sasha Fierce! Accepting we’ll be told “no” way more than “yes” is important to grasp when you enter this star-studded game. So grow some thick skin and an even bigger pair of balls, because you’ll need both. In the meantime, I’m going to prep you with ammo to hit the casting side hard with the strongest and healthiest version of you, from heart to head.

1) A bit of pressure is great for motivation. However, a ton of pressure can leak into self-sabotage. We have control over a number of choices, what we eat to fuel ourselves, the amount of preparation, being in the right mindset, and rocking that self-confidence. But when we don’t get the job, the gig, or even just the audition, it’s utterly important to deal with the disappointment in a healthy way. Accept that rejection is part of being an entertainer and entrepreneur—and know you aren’t the only person who wasn’t picked. A thousand others didn’t even get the opportunity to audition, and hundreds did audition and were turned away also! Don’t make assumptions as to why they rejected you—maybe your beautiful long hair reminded someone of a jerk ex or you were just too damn good looking to stand across from the already-cast lead.

2) It’s all about mindset! Watch the words you speak to yourself. Ask, “Would I talk to a good friend like that?” Then don’t do it to you! You’ve got to be your biggest fan. If you’re not feeling great after an audition or performance, quickly pull yourself out of that spiral. Practice mantras and affirmations. Smile and feel your way into a better emotion and feeling. Not only does that affect you, but it’s contagious and will positively affect everyone else you pass that smile and cheer along to. I’m smiling right now as I write this—can you feel it?!

3) Our brains are very powerful. Your brain controls everything, so feed it powerfully—including thoughts, visuals, and food. Eat a healthy, balanced diet for the day because it will set the tone. Consume brain foods like pasture-raised organic eggs, sprouted Ezekiel bread, organic nut butters, walnuts, plant based smoothies, and oatmeal with superseeds (chia, hemp, and flaxseed meal). Those complex carbs are rich in fiber and slowly digest keeping you stable, and fuller, longer. The eggs, nuts, and seeds are loaded with omega fatty acids; these high performers will keep you elevated and high functioning. You’ll definitely have a muscular leg up on someone who fueled with a Pop Tart and Yoohoo!

4) Give yourself a pat on the back for pursuing your dreams. Be proud of your hustle and don’t let the man get you down. Remember to celebrate those little victories! Acknowledge all your forward movement and accomplishments. You suited up, showed up, and got out of your comfort zone. What courage it takes to go after your dreams! I’m proud of you! It’s so easy to bash yourself after feeling rejected; put down the bat, grab the mitt, and catch yourself. Look at each situation as another opportunity meant for something even better. We grow the most when we stretch ourselves and make mistakes, so get out there and give it a shot kid!

5) Build in a de-stressing routine and meditation. The busyness of the hustle can be stress inducing, and that energy needs to stay out of any performance area. Swap out caffeinated coffee for herbal tea or Dandy Blend (the most delicious, liver detoxifying alternative). Practice being zen within the crazy of your city. Bring the peace, fun, and happiness with you instead of looking for it. It’s always been right there inside of you, not on the other side of a job, person, or thing.

6) Do you love yourself like the star that you are? Self-care always belongs on your call sheet. Add in relaxing and invigorating rituals like a bubble bath or walk with your dog (or a shelter dog) after a long day of driving around for auditions. Treat yourself to something awesome like an acai bowl or iced green tea.

Remember, everyone’s definition of “making it” is different. Comparison is the thief of joy. Keep your skills strong and your mindset even stronger.
