Health Uncensored: There’s a new C word in town!

Health Uncensored: There’s a new C word in town!

It’s so easy to get caught up in the c-word. Oh, ya know, comparison. Even when we achieve impressively high goals, we don’t stay in that feeling of accomplishment as long as we should. It takes one measly scroll through Facebook to instill feelings of inadequacy and maybe even anger. Or is that just me? Lol. Then we wonder, “Does he/she ever feel this crappy emotion too? Maybe they’ve just got it all figured out?” Unfortunately, since we are all human, these emotions come and go. But, it’s about letting them go fast and minimizing how often they come.

I don’t know who the heck originally said this phrase, but they are spot on. “Comparison is the thief of joy.” Makes total sense, right? You book a guest star on your favorite comedy and could not be happier. That is, until you read the #blessed #actorlife post of your fellow classmate who snagged the lead in a short film. This comparison literally robs the joy from our own life and radiates negative energy out. This can be applied to all areas of life, not just entertainment. Why do we think the grass is greener when we’ve all got weeds the neighbors can’t see? Believe me, I suffer from this thinking too! The forward movement comes from focusing on our own growth, accomplishments, the small things that make us really happy and practicing gratitude. These healthy habits shift our vibe and mindset.

Health Uncensored: Surround Yourself with Stars!

My mom has always said, “You become who you hang around.” Such true words! Think about the influence our friends or acquaintances have on us; hey lift us up to their level . . . or drag our asses down. Misery loves company, but not our company! We’ve got goals to accomplish and real friends by our side to help us obtain them.

There’s been a lot of insightful sayings in my family, so let’s pretend you’re at my Sunday dinner. Another serving of veggies for you? Okay, kidding, couldn’t help myself. Grandpa would look dead in your eyes, “You choose your friends, you choose your future! Now what’s it going to be?” My cousins and I would laugh as kids, but man, this makes so much sense. Surrounding yourself with friends who have a positive outlook, set goals, work out of their comfort zone, and always strive for greatness will have a huge impact on all those areas of your life too!

Health Uncensored: Actors, Fake It ‘Til You Make It!

Everyone knows the motto of this biz: “Fake it ’til you make it!” This can be applied to most situations in life where you gotta pump yourself up and tap into your own inner Sasha Fierce! Accepting we’ll be told “no” way more than “yes” is important to grasp when you enter this star-studded game. So grow some thick skin and an even bigger pair of balls, because you’ll need both. In the meantime, I’m going to prep you with ammo to hit the casting side hard with the strongest and healthiest version of you, from heart to head.

1) A bit of pressure is great for motivation. However, a ton of pressure can leak into self-sabotage. We have control over a number of choices, what we eat to fuel ourselves, the amount of preparation, being in the right mindset, and rocking that self-confidence. But when we don’t get the job, the gig, or even just the audition, it’s utterly important to deal with the disappointment in a healthy way. Accept that rejection is part of being an entertainer and entrepreneur—and know you aren’t the only person who wasn’t picked. A thousand others didn’t even get the opportunity to audition, and hundreds did audition and were turned away also! Don’t make assumptions as to why they rejected you—maybe your beautiful long hair reminded someone of a jerk ex or you were just too damn good looking to stand across from the already-cast lead.

Health Uncensored: Tips for Actors to Own Their Lines Like a Boss!

“Where did I put my keys? Has anyone seen my script? Crap, what’s that girls name? She was in my improv class last year. I wish I had someone with me to introduce to ask her name.”

Having a slight lapse in memory is one thing, but forgetting lines that your job relies on is another. The quicker a performer can commit their scene to memory, the better. Keeping our brains quick and sharp is a beneficial tool for acting, and life in general.

There are foods that feed our brains, and others that have the killer combo of taking a parting gift of brain cells and leaving the unwanted gift of fat cells. So what the heck are these foods? Let’s start with the ones that don’t belong on set: refined sugars, white bleached flours, fried foods, artificial sugars, artificial colors, hydrogenated oils, saturated fats, and heavily processed meats. Research shows that saturated fat impairs concentration and increases the risk of dementia. Additionally, a high stress environment, negative emotions, and lack of sleep eats away at our memory too. Take a deep breath with me right now and hit the hay early tonight. And not with your scene partner!

Health Uncensored: Car Snacks That Book the Role!

Yes! The notification from your agency pops up in your email: you have an audition! The excitement wanes a bit as you realize it’s half a city away at 4pm. While the dread of traffic is normal, my Health Coach brain starts thinking of what snacks I am going to bring for the length of time I’ll be in the car. Performers spend an exorbitant amount of their day on subways or driving to auditions, set, etc. Staying properly fueled to arrive strong and smart—as well as snacking on foods that encourage a calm and centered mind while returning home—makes all the difference.

I’ve got you! Here are my top 7 car snacks that book the role!

1) High fiber fruit

Most people don’t get enough fiber in their diets. How much do we need you ask? Around 25 grams a day. This is an easy way to up that number. Fiber keeps you full longer, lowers cholesterol, protects your heart, assists in weight loss, and keeps the “pipes” clean.

I always grab a green apple because they have the least amount of sugar. No one wants to sugar crash as they walk into the audition room. At almost five grams of fiber, they’re also loaded with vitamins and minerals. Plus, green apples help with digestion and prevent diarrhea. Don’t act like you’ve never gotten nervous runs. This green bad boy also improves memory—no more “what was my line?” And you can thank Mother Nature for making the crunch of an apple the toothbrush of produce.
